Could it be a party? --  with Marlene Nourbese Philip, Wisława Szymborska, and Yusef Komunyakaa. 

 

4. Best writing advice you could put on a coffee mug?

I first moved to Dorchester in 1994 right after college. I then moved out for a stretch, coming back in 2005.

                   2. Complete this sentence: I wouldn’t have made it through this winter without...

            Wine.

                 3.  If you were on a warm, sunny stranded island which poet/author would you want  for company?

Probably Oscar Wilde. He was witty and liked to drink. (That’s assuming there was alcohol on this stranded island.)

           4. Best writing advice you could put on a coffee mug?

Find a way to be productive even when you don’t feel productive.

3. If you were on a warm, sunny stranded island which poet/author would you want for company?

Thoreau, Mary Oliver, or Annie Dillard—someone with proven wilderness survival skills.

4. Best writing advice you could put on a coffee mug?

Make poetry your second daily habit.

 

Nazila Hafezi

               1. How long have you been living and/or studying in Dorchester? 

                  

                   Almost three years.

               2. Complete this sentence: I wouldn’t have made it through this winter without...

                    Netflix!

       3. If you were on a warm, sunny stranded island which poet/author would you want for company? 

               Roberto Bolaño, the great Chilean poet and author, who always lived in exile. For   his Savage Detectives and his amazing sense of humor in his writing, and for the fact that he had to switch from writing poems to writing novels in order to feed his family.

              4.  Best writing advice you could put on a coffee mug?

Now Recruiting Human Books for THE HUMAN LIBRARY!

LET YOUR STORY BE HEARD.

 

Now recruiting HUMAN BOOKS for our April 2015 Human Library Event!

The Human Library is an equalities project developed to challenge societal prejudices, and to help people form a better understanding of those with whom they share their communities.

The role of the Human Book is central to the library’s success. Through respectful conversation with members of the public who “borrow” them during the event, Human Books will challenge stereotypes and prejudices relating to their own experiences. They will create a book title for themselves that relates directly to their experience of prejudice and/or discrimination.

You are eligible to be a Human Book if you have experienced prejudice due to issues such as race, sex, age, disability, sexual preference, gender identity, class, religion/belief, lifestyle choices or other aspects of who you are.

Boston’s first-ever Human Library event will be taking place on Saturday, April 18th from 10-2PM at the Field’s Corner Library in Dorchester, MA. The Human Library is sponsored by Write on the DOT, The UMass Boston MFA Program, and BPL Field’s Corner.

An info session for interested Human Books will be held in March. Contact Lynn and Elysia at dotreadingseries@gmail.com to participate in this groundbreaking event!

Saturday, April 18th 10am - 2pm THE HUMAN LIBRARY

On Saturday, April 18^th the librarians at Field’s Corner BPL will not be “shushing” patrons but encouraging them to check out live Human Books as a part of Write on the DOT's special event The Human Library. Individuals who have experienced prejudice and stereotyping will be volunteering their time as a Human Book, open to dialogue concerning their experiences.

The Human Library was created in 2000 by members of the Danish youth organization Stop The Violence and it is now operational in more than 60 countries. It was developed to challenge

societal prejudices wherever and for whatever reasons they occur, and to help people form
a better understanding of those with whom they share their communities. This will be the first Human Library event to take place in Massachusetts!
